GOOS-Brazil is the Brazilian national GOOS component of the Regional Alliance for the Upper Southwest and Tropical Atlantic, OCEATLAN.
The Brazilian ocean observing system includes gathering, coordination, quality control, and operational distribution of oceanographic data.

Modules
Module I: monitoring, assessment, climate prediction
The ocean provides the opportunity for monitoring climate changes in low-frequency time-scales. That because the oceans play an important role in the determination of the weather and climate in our planet.
ENSO, deep water formation and uptake of carbon, coupled to greenhouse gas warming, are manifestations of the role of the ocean on climate change and its complex interactions with the other components of the climate system. The complex interactions between the ocean and the atmospher should also be taken into account to a comprehensive understanding of the climate change.
The activities currently underway towards the ocean monitoring are:
- Monitoring of the mean sea level using an array of tide gauges along the coast. This project is part of the GLOSS-BRAZIL program and it is managed by DHN;
- Implementation and maintenance of moored buoys of the PIRATA project in the Tropical Atlantic;
- Operational climate modeling by CPTEC;
- Deployment of drifting and moored byoys in the South Atlantic by PNBOIA.
Projects
The monitoring activities in the South Atlantic are performed by the following projects:
