What is PNBOIA?
The National Buoy Program (PNBOIA) is the Brazilian national program to implement an array of drifters and coastal moorings, both monitored by satellite, and to make the data available to the scientific community in near real time.
The focus of PNBOIA is to improve the knowledge of the oceanic circulation of the South Atlantic Ocean by analyzing the lagrangian trajectories and the data collected by drifting buoys and moorings.

Timeline
- 1996 - Constitution of a special task group, composed with experts in meteorology and oceanography, to prepare the guidelines of the Brazilian Buoy Program.
- 1997 - Presentation of the PNBOIA project to the final document to the Pilot Program GOOS Brazil Executive Committee This document was approved by the government at the 133rd Session of the Marine Resource Inter-Ministerial Committee on April/30/1997.
- May/09/1997 - During the 2nd Extraordinary Session of the Executive Committee for the GOOS/Brazil, PNBOIA became an official activity of the GOOS Brazil Pilot Program.
- Oct/10/1998 - Approval for the creation of the Sub-committee for Management of PNBOIA by SECIRM. The DHN was assigned by the Brazilian Navy to coordinate all the actions concerning PNBOIA's development.
- Dec/27/1999 - The Brazilian Navy Hydrographic Centre (CHM) was assigned to take over the DHN's technical tasks and is now in charged of the Buoy Program.
